With the Humanitarian Capri Award presented to the Italian box office hit of 2024, Il ragazzo dai pantaloni rosa (The Boy with the Pink Pants) by Margherita Ferri, starring Claudia Pandolfi and Andrea Arru (produced by Roberto Proia for Eagle Pictures), social and humanitarian commitment will take center stage at the 29th edition of Capri, Hollywood (December 26 – January 2). This year’s theme, “Diversity: The Colors of Beauty,” will be explored through 218 works.

“The significant film, a powerful denunciation of bullying and homophobia inspired by a tragic true story, has already grossed over eight million euros and continues to captivate audiences, especially younger viewers,” noted festival founder and producer Pascal Vicedomini. “It is a powerful testament to the strength of our cinema, which, by addressing such themes, can resonate with a global audience.”

The Humanitarian Award will also be presented to Dario D’Ambrosi, a pioneer of Pathological Theater in Rome.

The theme of diversity as a value will be further explored during symposia at the Certosa di San Giacomo, which will also host an exhibition by B.Zarro, with actress Vittoria Schisano as its patroness.

Equally noteworthy is the presentation of the Capri Best Ensemble Cast Award 2024 to Jacques Audiard’s film Emilia Pérez, starring Karla Sofía Gascón, a triumph at the EFA Awards, with 10 Golden Globe nominations, and one of the most anticipated contenders at the Oscars (March 2).

Meanwhile, the Blue Island is gearing up to take center stage once again. The festival will feature 218 films, with 71 screenings on the island (at Cinema Paradiso in Anacapri and the Capri Congress Center) and 147 available via streaming (71 on the platform eventive.org and 76 on mymovies.it).

As per tradition, Italian and international cinema will meet in a bridge that has become the symbolic opener of the awards season. Expected attendees include actress Martina Scrinzi (star of Vermiglio by Maura Delpero, competing for the Golden Globe and the 2025 Oscar) and young talent Andrea Arru (co-starring with Samuele Carrino in Ferri’s record-breaking film at the Italian box office). Other notable names include Bobby Moresco and Yaniv Raz (USA), Pascal Tessaud (France), British director Ben Charles Edwards and actor Gary Stretch (UK) for the world premiere of the opening film The Wheels of Heaven, co-starring Mickey Rourke.

Additionally, the event will welcome actors Frank Grillo, Clayton Norcross, and Katherine Kelly Lang (USA); Vincent Riotta (UK); Eleonora Ivanova, Dimitar Nikolov, and Dessy Tenekedjieva (Bulgaria); Madalina Ghenea (Romania); along with Massimo Ghini, Lina Sastri, Peppe Lanzetta, Claudia Gerini, Massimo Boldi, Enrico Vanzina, Giampaolo Morelli, Maria Pia Calzone, and Academy Award winners Zach Staenberg, Alessandro Bertolazzi, and Gianni Quaranta.

Presided over by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Nick Vallelonga (Green Book) and Franco Nero, the festival is organized by the Capri in the World Institute, with honorary president Tony Renis. It is supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture (DGCinema e Audiovisivi), the Campania Region, and enjoys the patronage of the City of Capri, the Municipality of Anacapri, the Metropolitan City of Naples, the Italian Red Cross, Nuovo IMAIE, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, and the Museums of Capri.

The festival’s partners include Intesa Sanpaolo, Riflessi-Made in Italy, Frecciarossa, and Givova, with contributions from Isaia, Caremar, The Hollywood Reporter-Rome, and Radio2 Rai.

Jerry Calà tells “Capri, Hollywood,” which presents him with a lifetime achievement award on Dec. 30.

“I have already made inspections in Monte di Procida, which is an extraordinary place, but I will also set the story in Ischia because I want people to return to this beautiful island as a place of cinema, famous for it since the 1960s. At the center of the story will be the kidnapping of a star, I cannot say more, it will be with a Neapolitan production company and with Neapolitan actors.”

He was the face of the 1980s, a decade for which people are beginning to feel nostalgia, not only in the movies. “A lot,” says the actor, “Even today’s kids like those movies because it’s clear that we had a lot more fun back then, there was more enthusiasm. We can consider them as sharp photographs of those years, from the boors of Christmas Vacation to the upstarts of Yuppis. Today economic conditions have changed: a boy could no longer ‘move out on his own’ especially with the prices in Milan! And anyway, if they stay at home, I don’t think it’s the fault of what they call bamboccioni, but of over-protective parents.”

In Capri, a career that started with the success of Gatti di Vicolo Miracoli, passed through iconic comedies but also a more committed cinema, will also be told in music. “I worked with Marco Ferreri, in Diary of a Vice, earning me the Italian critics’ prize in Berlin. Too bad then that we were not able to make a second project together again. Then with Avati, Marco Risi, understood that I could also do something else. Let’s say, however, that my comic side got the upper hand, and the audience then you have to respect it. I still do more than a hundred nights a year and play Maracaibo. But I’m a 70-year-old who is still young. And ready for other roles as well!”.
