As is customary for the artist, this return is not marked by nostalgic commemoration, but by a renewed push at the boundaries of his ongoing research.
Regarded as one of the leading figures of contemporary Appropriation Art, alongside names such as Richard Prince and Sherrie Levine, B. ZARRO engages with the festival’s legacy—and its iconic presences—through a language that blends the irreverence of reuse with a profound reflection on the nature of the image itself. For Capri Hollywood, he presents an entirely new body of work in which handcrafted photographic gels enter into dialogue with historic images of film and music stars who, over the festival’s thirty-year history, have passed through Capri, leaving an indelible mark. Onto these familiar, almost archetypal figures, the artist grafts chromatic blooms, painterly stratifications and overlays that hover between transparency and revelation.
A Contemporary Hellenism: Between East and West
In this new phase of his research, B. ZARRO develops an unexpected synthesis: the encounter between Eastern spiritual visions—with their symbols of metamorphosis, lightness and impermanence—and the Western tradition of material culture, rooted in presence, corporeality and the icons of visual consumption. From this dialogue emerges what the artist himself defines as a form of Contemporary Hellenism: a cultural bridge where the sacredness of Eastern imagery meets the heroic—and often overexposed—representation of the Western star. His works thus become a secular meditation, a space of passage: the face of a Hollywood actor dissolves into a weave of petals; a legendary singer seems to surface from a veil of pigments like a mandala in dissolution; Western myth reflects an Eastern aura, as if glamour were finally free to evolve into a symbolic dimension.

Following the success of the exhibition Architexture at the Venice Architecture Biennale—an achievement that led to his appointment to create two official awards for the Venice Film Festival—B. ZARRO arrives on the island of Capri with a series that brings his technique to full maturity. Per Capri Hollywood presenta una serie completamente nuova, in cui gelatine fotografiche realizzate manualmente dialogano con storiche immagini di star del cinema e della musica che, nel corso dei trent’anni della manifestazione, hanno attraversato Capri lasciandone un segno indelebile. Su queste figure note, quasi archetipiche, l’artista innesta fioriture cromatiche, stratificazioni pittoriche e sovrapposizioni che sfiorano la trasparenza e la rivelazione.
Un Ellenismo Contemporaneo: tra Oriente e Occidente
Da questo dialogo nasce ciò che l’artista stesso definisce una forma di Ellenismo Contemporaneo: un ponte culturale in cui la sacralità dell’immagine orientale incontra la rappresentazione eroica — e spesso consumata — della star occidentale.Le sue opere diventano così una meditazione laica, un luogo di attraversamento: il volto di un attore hollywoodiano si dissolve in una tessitura di petali; una cantante leggendaria sembra emergere da un velo di pigmenti come da un mandala in disgregazione; il mito occidentale riflette un’aura orientale, come se il glamour fosse finalmente libero di evolversi in dimensione simbolica.

Dopo il successo della mostra Architexture alla Biennale di Architettura di Venezia — che gli è valsa l’incarico per la realizzazione di due premi ufficiali del Festival del Cinema di Venezia
— B.ZARRO approda sull’Isola di Capri con una serie in cui porta a compimento la propria tecnica.
Le sue opere non si limitano a sfidare la fotografia o la pittura: si impongono come presenze tridimensionali, quasi scultoree, grazie al lavoro materico e alla manipolazione delle gelatine.
