CAPRI, Italy, January 2, 2020 – With two key awards events virtually upon us – the opening of Oscar® nominations voting today and the Golden Globes® ceremonies this Sunday, January 5th – it was revealed that two films were tied with six awards each at the just ended 24th annual Capri, Hollywood – The International Film Festival. Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman’s kudos included Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Joe Pesci) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Steve Zaillian) while Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood’s Quentin Tarantino took home the Best Director nod, with Best Ensemble Cast and Best Producer (Shannon McIntosh) amongst its other awards.
The announcement was made by the iconic Italian actor Franco Nero and festival founder and producer Pascal Vicedomini. Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) was named Best Actor, Renee Zellweger (Judy) Best Actress, Joe Pesci (The Irishman) Best Supporting Actor and Laura Dern (Marriage Story) Best Supporting Actress.
They also announced that Lion King nabbed three awards (Original Song, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing) followed by Marriage Story with two (Supporting Actor and Original Screenplay). Toy Story 4 was named Best Animated Feature, Parasite Best International Feature and American Factory Best Documentary Feature. In addition, special Capri Awards were handed out to the Eddie Murphy starrer Dolemite is My Name as the Best Comedy of the Year and director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters, Last Christmas)was named the festival’s inaugural King of Comedy.
“This was an extraordinary year for the quality of the artists who attended, and the variety of films that were presented at Capri, Hollywood,” said Nero and Vicedomini at the close of the festival. “We’re positive that most of our award winners will go on to be honored at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Best wishes to everyone and we are looking forward seeing you in Los Angeles at the 2020 edition the LA, Italia Film, Fashion & Art Fest (February 2-8).”
Chaired by Italian filmmaker Francesca Archibugi with the Israeli music icon Noa serving as president, the annual cinematic event that ran from December 27th through January 2, 2020 has become an important stop for films on the road to year-end awards. Organized by the Capri in the World Institute, this year’s edition of Capri, Hollywood – The International Film Festival was dedicated to the Italian filmmaker Gillo Pontecorvo on the 100th anniversary of his birth. It is presented with the support of Mibact-Dg Cinema and Italy’s Campania Region in collaboration with numerous private sponsors.
